Rutland Water continues to fish well on both the bank and from the boat. Some good specimen Rainbows and Browns have shown this week. One angler reported hooking and losing a monster Brown, estimated in its teens. Whilst the trout are taking fry patterns they are still gorging on snails in the margins.
Best areas to try for boat fishing are Carrot to R Buoy around 100 yards off the bank; in front of the lodge down and past the church, Half Moon Spinney, Barn Hill. Best spots for bank anglers are Carrot to Armley and Armley to Transformer, Barnhill frontage. Patterns to try include grunters, daddies, minkies, popper minkies and humungus.
Winter restrictions
A polite reminder that Winter restrictions are now in place. Firstly all browns must be returned alive as they are now out of season. This will be the case for the rest of this season and through to the end of March. When fishing the harbour at Rutland barbless or de-barbed flies are now mandatory; in addition if you are fishing from the harbour wall you must use an unhooking mat if you are taking Browns out of the net and onto the wall to unhook / photograph. Mats can be borrowed from the fishery. Secondly there are a number of out of bounds areas to be aware of. At Rutland, for boat anglers, the ends of the arms are now out of bounds, for bank anglers it’s the same areas as the boat anglers, but also Dickinsons on the North shore and Gibbets through to the sailing club on the south. Search Anglian Water Fisheries on Facebook to view a detailed map showing the out of bounds areas.
