Rutland Water week ending 7th July

The steady winds and good cloud cover provided anglers with good sport this last week. Boat anglers not only found fish on the aerators but also drifting the Normanton bank from the church to fantasy island. It wasn’t just sunk line tactics with lures with many anglers deploying a floater with nymphs that were very high in the water. Boats that solely fished the aerators recorded limits in 3 hours or so fishing! Browns to just over 6lb were recorded with plenty of quality rainbows in the 2 – 3lb+ class. Best rainbow of the week weighed in at 5lb 9oz. Although boats who ventured down the arms didn’t have much to report a number of anglers commented on the masses of this years roach and perch fry around the shoreline down both arms. Very few bank anglers have been venturing out however some fish are being seen moving very close to the bank, particularly along the Normanton bank. With the level of the reservoir dropping weed beds are being exposed in the bank anglers range. Although these can make presentation difficult they will be harbouring a lot of natural food such as fry, snail and corixa. Our resident instructor Peter Hartley has had another busy season teaching anglers across all of our waters. Saturday saw Peter took 4 budding fly anglers to the blue pipes after instruction and one of them managed their first trout on the fly, a fantastic achievement!

Prospects for the week ahead look good with reasonable temperatures, relatively settled winds and good cloud cover on the forecast. Expect the main basin to continue to provide the bulk of sport. It wont be long now before the trout turn their attention to this years fry, many of which are already approx. 3 inches long! Water clarity is excellent despite the recent hot weather.

Tuesday Night Boat league (week 10)

Vince Sparrow won the night and also the biggest fish at 3lb 2oz. Second was Chris Evans and Graham Measures in third. It is still all to play for heading into the last 2 weeks with Rick Cooper (51 points), Chris Evans (48) and Keith Jones (46) all in contention for the overall league.

Fish Stocked - 2000 (48,000 season total)

Fish week 389 (season total 20571 ), Returns 99 (season 3834) Rod average 3.92 (5.46)

Rutland

Main basin still providing good amounts of fish for boat anglers with some anglers recording double figure catches. The few anglers who have ventured further afield have reported specimen browns up to 7lb8oz and many big fish following the flies. The rainbows are in superb condition in the 2 – 3lb8oz class and really giving a good account of themselves. On the fly selection front it has been a real mixed bag, snakes on sinking lines, blobs, boobies all the way to hares ear and diawl bach. The same can be said for lines with floaters to di8 all taking fish dependant on conditions.

As mentioned previously this year has seen fantastic recruitment in terms of fry, there are huge numbers of perch this year. There are still very few bank anglers venturing out but with the water level of the reservoir dropping fast weed beds are being exposed. Water clarity remains exceptional.

Boat league week 11

Rick Copper took the win with 8 fish for the evening. Mick Connor second with 5 and Chris Evans third with 3 fish. Keith Jones took the biggest rainbow of the evening at 3lb14 ½oz. With 2 weeks to go the league is still up for grabs with Rick Cooper (61 points), Keith Jones (54) and Chris Evans (53).
