Rutland Water week ending 13 March

Opening Day rod average 4.4

Rutland Water opened on Friday 11 March with 12,500 fish stocked to date. The first two days of the season saw anglers faced with tricky weather conditions with bright sun at times and fairly high winds gusting to 30mph. Not ideal but it was great to see everyone that ventured out. We have seen mixed results in the first few days. The boat anglers have enjoyed the best of the sport.

Boat anglers have enjoyed success with catch returns showing many limits being taken by a good number of anglers. One boat successfully caught drifting onwards the buoy line off the dam and catching on sinking lines with humungus and tubes. Another reported 28 Rainbows to the boat, these had been caught using Di5 lines and snakes, blobs and cormorants.

The bank fishing has been mainly a slow start which could be partially due to the low water levels and volume of the recently pumped in water raising the level of the reservoir quickly. Due to the wind and its direction the main concentration of anglers has been from East Creek to Fantasy and Whitwell Creek. It was a disappointing start for many on the bank but we have had reports of a 6½lb Brown being caught near the Transformer on hairs ears and another angler catching 7 Rainbows from East Creek on buzzers.

It’s been great to welcome everyone back to Rutland and remember it’s still early days and we will hopefully have more information for you in next week’s report. The garage adjacent to the Ranger’s office is now open and has regular updates on the notice board with the latest methods and hot spots. Why not pop down to have a look and share what's been successful for you.
