Grafham Water week ending 8th October 2023

Fish killed & released 166, Returns - 58, Rod average - 2.8

Grafham Water has at times switched on this week. It has been noticeable that the weather conditions on any given day have had a massive influence on catch rates even within a day. On the cloudy overcast, breezy days there have been good numbers of fish reported from both bank and boat. On the bright sunny flat day’s it has been like fishing a different venue – rock hard.

On the favourable days from both bank and boat it has been either close in with washing line with a small fab on the point and small hares ear/shrimp patterns up the line or pulling fry patterns around the weed beds, black seems to be the colour of preference, at the moment or blobs on a Di3 in open water. There are quite a lot of juvenile damsel nymphs about as well so small and green might be worth a try as well.

Best bank areas are all the points along the north shore as expected particularly Deep Water Point. The early Dam fishers (before 9 am) are also catching well in the short time allowed again using washing line tactics.

Best boat areas are again close in along the north shore (without upsetting the bank anglers) and around the dying weed beds particularly along the dam and N buoy. There are quite a few daddies about as well.

Predator fishing info is always difficult to come by however there have been lots of boats along the pipeline particularly down near the aerators but not actually on them. There are always preds around the towers and around the weed beds. Look for areas with cormorant and gull activity as they will point to where the bait fish are.
