Grafham Water week ending 15th October 2023

Fish killed & released 564, Returns - 179, Rod average - 3.2

Very large fish have been caught at Grafham this week. We’ve had reports of several 5-6 pound plus rainbows as well as 9 pound brownies (on catch and release). Most of these superb fish have been caught around the north shore with the still popular areas of Hedge End and Pylon Point for example.

Some anglers reported high quantities of 1-2.5 pound rainbows to the boat going as high as 18 which is a fantastic result considering that fishing has been tough in many areas of the UK and Ireland we have been told.

Temperatures and atmospheric pressures have been up and down this week and so has the fishing. Generally speaking anglers have been finding the fish very close near the shore or in very deep water. Both trout and predator anglers have expressed their relief about the north winds cooling down the waters.

Successful methods for the trout fishing have been floating lines or short tip lines with shrimps, fabs and diawl bachs. However, many anglers have reported that the established methods of the last few weeks had lost their sparkle on occasion and that we are in a period of having to experiment around a little bit to find the best methods for the changing conditions.

This weekend saw the return of the ever popular and longstanding Frybashers event. 100 top anglers graced us with their amazing presence and were some were so generous to share their secret catching methods with us: Di5 with snakes, slow tip with fab and diawl bachs (a lot of them used diawl bachs!), twiddling, washingline with nymphs.

On busy days like these it is always a pleasure to see the hustle and bustle on the pontoon in the morning, the banter and happy chats and the excitement of the whole fleet rushing out in one giant roar of engines. Let’s have even more days like these....
