Fish week 617 (Season 828) Returns 70 (97) Rod average 8.81 (8.53)

Rutland water

What a great start to the season with both bank and boat anglers continuing to have great sport and this bodes very well for the coming season which will only get better.

For most of the week we have enjoyed warmer southerly weather all be it windy at times but this has given us some great buzzer hatches all around the reservoir.

Fish continue to be well spread around the reservoir and the water is very clear, it’s again given anglers some great sport in lots of different locations from the boat and off the bank.

One thing that has been noted this week fish seem to be close in to the bank, Barnsdale for example one boat drifted through a few times without a pull and then decided to fish close to the tree line and caught a good number, the same has also been mentioned about Whitwell front and Yellowstone.

Boat areas

Normanton from the church to Fantasy has fished well again, the front of Whitwell Creek, Old Hall, around Tree in water up the north arm, Barnsdale, Yellowstone and Dickinsons. All of these areas have produced fish and for some significant numbers have been reported.

Methods

Sinking lines from Di3 to Di7 have been the most used but also buzzers under the bung worked well for one angler. Tip lines and nymphs have also been effective on days when the wind has allowed for good control.

Early season flies have worked again boobies, fabs and blobs have worked along with buzzers or crunchers on droppers. The water continues to be crystal clear so again think about decent spacing between those flies or drop to a 2-fly cast well-spaced. Black and green and small snakes have also worked well.

Bank areas

Normanton to Fantasy, Ernie’s Point, Whitwell Creek and the Tree in water to Armley Wood.

Methods

Same as last week floating line with hare’s ear or small buzzers fished on the point and dropper have produced some great takes especially when allowing the flies to fish dead drift/swinging round on the wind.

Slow sinking line with Blob/FAB's on the point along with a blob or nymph/hares' ear on the dropper or a snake on the point.
