Rutland Water Week Ending 16th July 2023

Rod avg 2.12

Indifferent weather all week  made things difficult, with many storms, coupled with seriously heavy showers and very strong winds Friday, and even worse conditions on Saturday with all boats cancelled on that day.

Earlier in the week however, fish were caught in a number of areas with boats in the main basin catching good sized rainbows in the 3lb + bracket, The Aerators are now back on,, so this should draw fish in the surrounding area to them, while a drift around the tower is always worth a go..

The bottom of the South arm in particular provided good sport around the weed beds on Tuesday, saw two anglers casting to pods of fish that were found to be feeding on Corixa, which is good news, they netted seven quality fish, plus many offers plus hooked, and lost a few more..

Bank wise, Good Numbers of fish are still to be found close into the shoreline again, This is now well over 12 weeks of this happening providing many great opportunities to the Dry fly angler, One angler on Wednesday fishing Normanton shoreline recorded nine fish, hooking/missing a few more as well, this area, and the opposite bank,(Whitwell front to Stockie bay) are the places to try with fish moving in the surface mainly feeding on Shrimp.

These two shorelines have been very beneficial for the bank angler to say the least this year due to the lack of weed, and because of it still witnessing, and casting to fish in less than a foot of water at times.

Prospects

Settled weather should see more consistent sport, It's good to hear that some fish are feeding on Corixa again, along with Shrimp and snails.

This years fry population, which are now averaging 2" in length still remain virtually unmolested, they were very rarely fed on in in the "Pin fry" stage this season, with fish preoccupied with the Shrimp,so theoretically there will be lots more around and bigger this time, just a matter of time and when the Trout decides to focus on them.
