Highlights from Rutland's Fur & Feather

Rutland Water was in fantastic form for the popular Fur and Feather on 5 December. Rutland didn’t disappoint showing fantastic winter form for the 33 anglers who took to the banks to fish for the coveted Christmas hampers. Fishing to a 6 fish limit 131 rainbows were recorded giving a fantastic rod average of 3.96 and the first 2 reported limits taken in the first hour of the match! Whitwell Creek was the place to be with a good number of six fish limits. Spaces were created in the hot spots with anglers going back to the lodge with their limits, giving other anglers a chance to cash in. Floating lines and intermediates were the order of the day with lures/fry patterns scoring. There were high numbers of quality rainbows over 3lb 8oz recorded. Best fish on the day was a superb rainbow of 4lb 10oz, winning the traditional bottle of gin for biggest fish. This year’s hamper winners were Gary Cooper (17lb 5oz) Simon Peck (16lb 8oz) and Graham Willis 3rd (16lb 7oz), congratulations! Well done to everyone who took part in this popular competition fished in the right spirit with plenty of laughs along the way. Everyone left with a prize and there was a great atmosphere at the weigh in with anglers discussing the day’s sport.

Armley Wood to Carrot Creek and Barnhill Creek have also produced good quality rainbows this week to fry patterns in various guises, albeit not in the same numbers that are currently showing in Whitwell Creek. Our boat fleet is now restricted to 20 until the end of the season on 31 January. Pre booking is strongly advised to avoid disappointment. We would like to wish all our customers a Happy Christmas from all the staff at the fishing lodge with the results above showing that it is not too late to enjoy some quality winter sport over the coming weeks.
