Latest update from Rutland Water

Top anglers from across Europe are fishing at Rutland Water this week in the final of the Anglian Water Airflo International. This prestigious two day match concludes on Wednesday 3 October.  Full results in next week’s Fishery News.

Rutland Water has been fishing well; some notable catches include John Liddy and John Anderson who visited us from Ireland for four days last week. The pair had well over 50 fish to their nets, mainly Rainbows up to 2½lb-3lb. Wet fly, buzzers and diawl bach proved very successful. The pair commented on the great condition and hard fighting quality of the fish.

Paul Friend and Ken Merridan fished last Wednesday and had a good day with 12 quality Rainbows up to 3lb 8oz, they fished rudder tactics.

Nigel Woolnough from Oakham hadn’t fished for a while, but following some advice on tactics and methods from ranger Nigel Savage, he boat fished down the south arm fishing small flies/nymphs. He returned to the lodge beaming after a very good day’s boat fishing.

Trevor Hardy from Stowmarket had a cracking 5lb 4oz Brown that had been feeding on perch fry. Trevor commented that he’d had rainbows out in the open water, but then decided to fish closer in around the weedbeds, fishing one of his old favourite spots. He had a really big brown follow his fly straight away, but it turned away, but Trevor’s perseverance paid off and shortly afterwards he had the 5lb fish.
