Rutland Water week ending 22 May

Fish week 983 (season total 15557), Returns 221 (2395) Rod average 4.44 (6.49)

A mixed week which saw good numbers of fish caught by boat anglers in the early part with fish coming from many areas of the reservoir, most tactics worked well ranging from straight forward nymph patterns to Booby/ nymph, washing line method, to teams of mini lures, Cormorants, blobs etc.

Things slowed down from Wednesday onwards, with anglers then concentrating fishing in the main basin area catching well with drifts up towards up towards the Dam.

Bank anglers again reported good fish moving in shallow water feeding on the reservoirs Shrimp & Snails, with the Normanton bank, New Zealand Point, and Whitwell frontage to Sykes Lane getting a fair bit of attention, on a few occasions there were very testing times on some days where fish, despite moving well, were being very elusive to take their flies.

Best tactic here for the shallow water feeders is to avoid wading, as a lot of fish are only in around 3 to four feet of water, best thing to do is actually stand back from the shoreline, and be patient and wait for the fish to move in front of you, dry fly has been the best method for these fish, be prepared though, as a lot of them are very fit, and hard fighting, so make sure your drag on your reel is set accordingly!!

Rudder pairs competition - Fished last Saturday, those who shared the prizes on the day were, Roy Bartram and Chris Binley winning the event with eight fish weighing 16lb 11oz, second was Adi Naylor, and Dave Bradshaw, with four fish weighing 11lb 1oz, third was Dave Mc Donald and Rob Teasdale with four fish weighing 9lb 5oz.

Best fish caught was a 4lb 7-½ oz Brown caught by Adi Naylor

Tuesday night boat league (Week 1)  - 15 anglers turned up the first night, With Paul Wild top rod with four fish earning him the maximum 10 points, second was Chris Evans with three fish, Third, was Keith Jones, with two fish which included the biggest fish of the night a 3lb rainbow, earning him the “Free” boat prize for his efforts.

Prospects - Fly hatches have been steady with various size buzzers coming off, an increasing number of Damsels have been hatching off, one or two anglers and staff have also viewed a few Mayfly during the evenings! Expect to see this year’s pin fry in the margins as the Roach, Perch, and Bream around the shoreline and the Trout to show their usual interest.

Something to think about, angler last Saturday reported a Brown estimated between 15-20lb take his fly, but frustratingly threw the hook in a split second whilst boat fishing the North arm!! Record to go this year??

Fish stocked: 2500 (35,000 season)
