Rutland Water week ending 18 August

Latest news from Rutland Water

Last week’s unsettled weather with rain and strong winds restricted fishing in some areas of the reservoir. There is now plenty of clear water to fish in so avoid the windward bank and shorelines.

Heavy rain stopped local farmer Chris Binley from harvesting, giving Chris the opportunity to fish with his brother Ian. The pair fished twice catching 18 fish using rudder tactics around the reservoir.

Peter de Kremer enjoyed an afternoon boat on Saturday taking a brace of 3½-4lb Rainbows on dries at the top of the North Arm.

A number of Browns started to show last week, mainly early season fish that were stocked in April. However, Rob Edmunds fished on Saturday with his father Gary. Gary hooked into a cracking 8lb 6oz Brown that fell to a white snake fished on a sinking line. This particular fish had been feeding on fry, and a crayfish estimated at 5-6 inches long. The pair also returned a smaller Brown, and several good silvered Rainbows up to 3lb plus. They fished short drifts off the bank down the South Arm. Rob commented that he had another big Brown follow right up to the boat that day.

Browns are feeding on the masses of fry, shrimp and crayfish, with the Rainbows likely to follow suit. The water level is at maximum and very clear in many areas. Settled weather would also help.

Please book boats in advance as demand is high. All boats are booked 1 and 2 September.  From 5-13 September our boat numbers will be reduced to 48 as some of our fleet heads to Grafham.

Rutland will be hosting the Anglian Water Loch Style 4 man team event (fished to International rules) on Saturday 31 August – to enter please call 01780 686441 for more information. This will also be practice day for the England Ladies National Final which takes place on Sunday 1 September.
