Rutland Water week ending 1 November

Fish 122 (Season 12,224) Returns 55 (2,718) Rod average 2.21 (4.54)

A consistent week at Rutland last week with good numbers of 3lb plus Rainbows taken round the weedbeds on popper minkies and floating fry. There are vast weedbeds in many areas so it pays to keep on the move and cover plenty of water to find the quality rainbows and browns.

Anglers have reported taking fish on dries in and around the weedbeds, with snail and shrimp all noted in stomach contents. There are also a lot of fish from the harbour frontage all the way along the Normanton bank with boat anglers recording double figure bags of rainbows fishing high in the water with FABs and boobies. On days with lighter winds a washing line set up on a tip line with hare’s ear and diawl bach on the dropper is a good method to employ.

Rutland’s famous browns have provided lots of anglers with numerous fine specimens in the 5-9lb class recorded. As to be expected fry patterns have been the go-to method for these fish. Off the bank the harbour and harbour wall have provided a lot of sport for fry feeding browns and rainbows with one angler recording two 9lb browns in one session. Whitwell Creek to Stockie Bay and Ernie’s Point have also produced for bank anglers and, in particular Half Moon Spinney to Spud Bay on the peninsula.

Due to the weedbeds round the banks dries have been a good option with flies attracting the fish that are feeding in these areas. 2,000 rainbows were stocked last week into Whitwell Creek bringing the season total to 70,640.

Fish stocked: 2,000.
