Grafham Water week ending 6 May

Fish 962 (season 2,677) Returns 151 (515) Rod average 6.37 (5.2)

This week the rod average at Grafham Water is a huge 6.37! Some great fishing is on offer whether on bank or boat, with many anglers catching on a mixture of methods throughout the day.

Another cracking effort from our anglers during the hot and bright weather has produced some whopping specimen trout, we have picked some of the best so apologies if we have missed you.

Firstly, a mention goes to Mr Signy, with over 30 fish to the boat on buzzer, many of them over wintered including specimens over  4lb towards the 5lb mark. Next a great effort by Mr Bowyer saw him land two rainbows over 4lb and the rest of his bag over 3lb, that is some good angling! Rumen Petkov  also managed a 4lb rainbow. Others fishing well include Mr Trumper, who landed a whopping 4lb 8oz rainbow.

The heaviest  fish of the week is shared between two anglers who each  landed big brown trout. Both Mr Swift and Mr Bharuche landed beautiful Browns of 5lb 8oz.

Again, the fish seem to be up and down in the water column with feed items including buzzer, daphnia, shrimp and snail, some are being caught very close in, particularly in the bays.

Boat fishing has been mostly on the buzzer, though a number of anglers have started to produce more to a lure in recent days. Many anglers are catching well on hare's ears, black buzzer, diawl bachs and magpie buzzer, with sizes ranging from 18-12. The fish are quite active though it is important to change tactics throughout the day to go home with a good bag of fish. Areas producing fish this week include, west bank, rainbow point, hill farm, pylon point, G buoy area, the seat, perry point and in front of the harbour.

We have seen some fantastic results off of the harbour arm this week with specimen fish landed. Pike and perch have also been caught. Bag sizes from the bank have been bigger than a lot of the boats are producing. Many fish are succumbing to buzzer with a range of depths working well and those fishing the bung, finding one or two right up in the surface layers. Other areas to try this week, the willows and the north dam area, use shrimp or hare's ears over here for a better day’s fishing. Generally, most areas off the bank are producing fish though they are quite spooky in the clear water, so try casting from the bank before you wade for the chance at catching some of the hunting fish.
