Grafham Water week ending 30 June

Fish 390 (Season 8,205) Returns 104 (1,662) Rod average 3.75 (4.93)

It was the turn of the pleasure anglers this week following on from the success of the match anglers last week. Anglers’ returns reflected some exciting sport and some finicky fish with comments like “lots of pulls, but difficult to hook!” It looks like fish are feeding on the pin fry. One angler tried every fly in his box without success, finally resorting to an aero buzzer with a very short dropper tied off the bend in the hook (New Zealand style), with a buzzer suspended just below the surface. His perseverance paid off and he bagged up.

Some fantastic sport has also been reported using dry flies, with 40 fish being taken during a single boat session and Stuart, from the fishing lodge, fishing on the dam with plenty of success in the evening.

So the conclusion is that Grafham is fishing well, from the boats and from the bank. Obviously try the dam, but the Willows, the Seat and Gaynes Cove are worth a try as the fish are now moving in. Best boat areas are wind dependent. The north shore is always a favourite but always check for the clean water. On Sunday it was very murky in some areas due to the strong off shore winds.
