Grafham Water week ending 15 July

Fish 327 (Season 8,570) Returns 91 (1,687) Rod average 3.6 (5.08)

The conditions have again been tough at Grafham over the last week, with the bright conditions having an impact on the fishing, although many anglers are taking good size fish, usually early or late in the day. The rod average is currently 3.6.

Some good bags of fish are being reported, with many landing fish around the 3lb mark. This week saw the aerator fish well, particularly up in the water, with some boats landing 20 or more fish. Well done to David Spall who took the best fish of the week - a fantastic Rainbow of 4lb 8oz. David was not alone in his efforts with Phil Jordan who also braved the conditions, and like a few others was rewarded with a large Zander of 13lb 2oz on the fly.

The bank has been fishing well considering the heat, though it has been a case of the earlier the better before slowing for the afternoon, followed by a rise in the late evening. Many anglers are having success fishing the dam wall, with a mixture of techniques producing the fish, dries, washing lines and shrimp are the more common methods. Although during the heat of the day sinking lines are well worth a try with short leaders coupled with boobies. As the reservoir starts to recede you are able to cast into some deeper water, though bear in mind some areas drop off quickly, so please ensure you carry some sort of prod stick!

Many boat anglers are concentrating their efforts around the deeper water around the dam, with the majority fishing close to the aerators, though others are having access away from here, covering feeding fish amongst the weed beds. If the wind picks up over the coming days back drifting may produce some good sport particularly out in open water, with black lures likely to be performing well.
