Grafham Water week ending 13 May

Fish 622 (season 3,299) Returns 108 (623) Rod average 5.76 (5.3)

Another great week of fishing at Grafham Water with the rod average staying high at 5.76 and the fishing improving as the week progressed.

We have seen some great angling this week in the changeable conditions. Many of the anglers are bringing back bags of 3lb fish with others producing larger specimens too. We have seen it all this week, buzzer fishing deep and shallow, lures on all lines and even a day of dry fly madness, before the rain came down! Some have produced cracking fish including John Carruthers who took a lovely rainbow of 4lb 2oz. Neil Walker also produced a fish of over 4lb, with Paul Calvert and Jamie Thomas’s fish taken in the Scierra Pairs match weighing in at 4lb 1oz. Lots of larger specimens were caught and released with some estimates going over 5lb.

Generally the fish have been hard on the feed with buzzer, daphnia and shrimp being common feed items. Anglers are finding the fish a little further out than in recent weeks, though this can be quite sporadic.

Boat fishing has been good this week with many tactics and styles working across the reservoir, though many are finding that they cannot catch on all tactics in all areas. Towards the end of the week boats drifting in open water saw a lot more fish than those in the bays, and off the points. The south shoreline has certainly produced the goods this week with Gaynes Cove, the Seat, in front of the harbour, l Buoy, Mander bank and west bank fishing very well.

Again some good results off the harbour arm this week with many fish landed. Mostly the fish are succumbing to buzzer, though anglers are catching on lures too. Remember the quieter banks around the reservoir will fish well at this time of year, particularly in front of the sludge lagoons and around into Church and Farm Bays and from Hedge End as well. You may find the lure start to come into form in the next week or so, so make sure you have all the right lines with you for your trip.

GWFFA social day Tuesday 8 May
Grafham Water Fly Fishers held the first of their midweek social events for club members with a view to encouraging novice anglers to join the club and to promote the use of the boats at Grafham Water and other AW fisheries.18

There were some fantastic fish all caught on various buzzer patterns including a superb brown trout of 4lb 4oz for club member John Tattersfield. Novice angler Jason Pedley from Huntingdon caught 3 fish on black buzzer two of which were rainbows of 4 ½lb and 4¾lb. Well done to him. Several other 3lb plus fish were reported. Best novice angler with 6 fish was Mark Brookbanks and best club angler was Stuart Stenning-White with 8 fish. Fish were caught all round the lake including Valley Creek, Sanctuary Bay and The Stumps. 63 fish were caught with a rod average of 3.5. Many thanks to Anglian Water fishery staff for assisting with the day.
