Alton Water Watersports Courses

From beginner to expert; fun to serious race skills; our enthusiastic and highly qualified instructors offer everything you need to be able to learn and develop new and existing skills.

Following National Governing Body standards, our instructors will not only help you enjoy your time on the water safely, they will instruct and provide you with on-water techniques, theory-based knowledge and even share their best tips and hints, so you can get the most out of your time spent under instruction here at Alton Water.

Whilst meeting the high standards set by the Royal Yachting Association, our courses are safe, fun, exciting and the ideal way to learn and progress in Sailing, Windsurfing, Kayaking, Canoeing, Stand Up Paddleboarding and Powerboating.

Should you wish to bring a group of children to experience the range of activities on offer at Alton Watersports, you can rest assured in the confidence that we are fully registered and licensed with the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority.

Which course is right for me?

We offer a wide range of watersports courses and cater for people of all ages and abilities, including novices and those looking to refresh existing skills. Tuition duration can range from hourly, half day and full day sessions, right through to full week courses. Tuition is available to groups and individuals alike and governing body ratios apply. For structured tuition we recommend that adults and juniors are taught separately. 'Have a go' sessions are available on request. Courses on offer include:

RYA Sailing

Course LengthDescriptionPrerequisites - to complete this course you will need
Adult RYA Dinghy Level 3 (Better Sailing)2 daysNow you have got the basic skills required to sail, this course will fine tune them so that you feel confident in a boat. The course covers things like maintaining speed through your turns as well as understanding and showing the 5 Essentials. The course will also cover more of the theory and preparation side so when you finish you will be confident to take out a boat on your own.
  • To be aged 16 years or older
  • Hold an adult RYA Dinghy Level 2 (Basic Skills) certificate
Fast-track Adult RYA Dinghy Level 1 & 2 combined
(Start Sailing and Basic Sailing)
4 daysThe fast track programme allows you to gain level 1 and 2. This courses aims to complete the syllabus and master the basic whilst being able to sail independently and as a team in variety of boats. Also, a good excuse to take a week off work and get out in the sunshine!
  • To be aged 16 years or older    
  • No previous sailing experience required

 

RYA Seamanship Skills 2 daysSeamanship Skills will help you to become an independent sailor, progressing your skills from Stage 4 or Level 3.  Can you sail backwards???  
  • To be aged 12 years+    
  • Youth RYA Dinghy Stage 4 or Adult RYA Dinghy Level 3
RYA Sailing with Spinnakers2 daysThis course is for those wanting to move beyond just 2 sails and explore the potential of 3. By the end of the course you will be able to rig, hoist, gybe, drop and sail with a spinnaker. when you get this right it can be a lot of fun.    
  • To be aged 12 years+    
  • Youth RYA Dinghy Stage 4 or Adult RYA Dinghy Level 3
RYA Start Racing2 daysLearn all the skills required to start club racing, including how to maximise boat speed and outwit your opponents. On this course sailors will learn the basic skills and tactics of racing.
  • To be aged 9 years+    
  • Youth RYA Dinghy Stage 3 or Adult RYA Dinghy Level 2
     
RYA Start Racing & Sailing with Spinnakers   5 days2 combined modules to prepare you for sailing your boat as fast as possible, making use of all available wind.    
  • To be aged 9 years+

RYA Windsurfing Courses

Youth Windsurfing Stage 1 5 daysThis course teaches you the basics of getting on the water and sailing the board across the wind and back to work towards RYA stage 1. Balancing practical simulator sessions and interactive theory sessions with plenty of on-water practice. 
  • To be aged 9 to 16 years    
  • No previous experience required
Youth Windsurfing Stage 25 daysThis course looks to improve your windsurfing skills, focusing on RYA stage 2 skills to get you sailing around a course practising tacking and gybing, enabling you to make progression towards and away from the wind.
  • To be aged 10 to 16 years 
  • Hold Youth RYA Windsurfing Stage 1 certificate
Youth Windsurfing Stage 35 daysThis course will improve on the skills previously learnt introducing beach starting and harness techniques with time spent enhancing stance on all points of sail and improve tacking and gybing in stronger winds. By the end of this course you will be hooking in and gaining speed. 
  • To be aged 11 to 16 years
  • Hold a Youth RYA Windsurfing Stage 2 certificate
Youth Windsurfing Stage 45 daysThis stage builds on a confident ability to tack, gybe and sail in harness. You will learn how to use the bored and sail and to encourage planing and controlling the board at higher speeds, with an introduction to foot strap techniques.  
  • To be aged 12 - 16 years
  • Hold a youth RYA Windsurfing Stage 3 certificate
Adult RYA Start Windsurfing2 daysThis course goes through the basics of rigging and gets you on the water to try some basic manoeuvres in a safe and controlled environment.
  • To be aged 16 years+    
  • No previous experience required
Adult RYA Intermediate Windsurfing2 daysThis course will help to fine tune your skills as well as introducing new techniques such as harnesses and planing.  Students will also focus on foot straps and blasting controls.
