Grafham Water week ending 5th May 2024

Rod average - 4.0

Slowly coming out of the cold, windy and rainy days we have seen more summery conditions this week. There has been a lot of change in the weather over the last 2 weeks and it seems to have influenced the fish.  The fish have become more finicky and with the clear water, often a more refined approach is required.  This will mean paying attention to presentation, so fly spacing, leader strength and fly size.  Anglers who have ‘worked it out on the day’ have been rewarded with good bags of fish, however at times others have been left scratching their heads.

Looking through the catch returns, One angler who boated 25 fish recommended using floating line, buzzers and shrimp. A 14 fish boat went through the entire repertoire, catching on Di5, booby, buzzers, Hares Ear and an orange fab.  A 15 fish boat said they had a fantastic day at the Stumps and Pig Bay using 12ftslow tip floater with hares ear and tadpole and fish feeding hard on the shrimp. Once again the fantastic condition of the fish was praised.

The harbour arms are extremely popular with fish regularly being seen in that area. Gaynes Cove, Deep Water Point have also been very popular.  To summarise, for flies, shrimp and buzzer on floating line seem to be working well. Other methods that seem to have proven successful were orange blob, damsel and diawl bach, green crunchers sub surface, mayfly nymph.

Pike fly fishing has started this week and we have heard reports of Pike caught up to 20lb.

Please keep submitting your online catch returns and provide as much feedback as possible so that we can forward this knowledge in the fishing report.

Thank you and tight lines
